HURRICANE - SYRUP MAGAZINE FEATURED DRINK
A perfect cocktail for a perfect day!
The hurricane is a simple but potent combination of several
different liquors and juices – Vodka, Grenadine, Gin ,
Light Rum, Bacardi 151 Proof Rum, Amaretto, Triple Sec, Grapefruit
Juice, and Pineapple Juice.
This New Orleans native cocktail was concocted during the
World War II at a famous New Orleans French Quarter Bar named
Pat O’Brien’s. It was recorded that this fruity
mixed drink came about when liquor, such as whiskey, was low
in supply. Liquor salesmen would force bar owners to purchase
as much as 50 cases of rum along with the 1 case of whiskey.
Rum was plentiful during World War II, and this made it possible
for salesmen to swindle their customers into purchasing this
much liquor.
The recipe for the Hurricane cocktail was created with the
help of an eager liquor salesman. The name for this mixed
drink came later after a glass shaped like a hurricane was
used to serve the fruity cocktail.
Until this day, Pat O’Brien’s Hurricane cocktail
glass is a favorite among tourists, as well as New Orleans
residents.
