BLOODY MARY - SYRUP MAGAZINE FEATURED DRINK
The Bloody
Mary cocktail first originated from Harry’s New York
Bar in Paris. It was first mixed by “Pete” Petoit.
When Pete came back to New York in the 1930’s, he first
introduced the Red Snapper as America’s first Bloody Mary
drink (which was made with Gin not Vodka). The name can be given
credit to Mary Tudor, the daughter of Henry VIII. Mary was Queen
for five years and killed most of her Protestant enemies. Which
in return, gave her the nickname “Bloody Mary.”
This classic cocktail recipe is a refreshing wake up call
and it has turned into an All-American cocktail, which means
it will probably be around forever. It is considered to be
a great hangover cure and bartenders are constantly adding
to the creativity of the mixed drink. You can create your
own signature recipe by adding or subtracting ingredients
in the cocktail. Horseradish? Wasabi? Jalapeños? Whatever
tickles your feather, be as original and inventive as you
can.
Some restaurants are now serving Bloody
Mary bars. They contain a smorgasbord of garnishes. The
more variety you have, the more the cocktail turns into a
meal of its own. Below is a list of ingredients you might
want to include in your own Bloody Mary Bar.
• Celery Sticks
• Artichoke Hearts
• Dill Pickle Spears
• Cold Boiled Shrimp
• Baby Corn
• Peppers
• Carrot Sticks |
• Cherry Tomatoes
• Mushroom Buttons
• Fresh Basil Leaves
• Dilly Beans
• Large Stuffed Olives
• Lime Wedges
• Cucumber Slices |
When entertaining for a group of people, the
best and easiest way to prepare a Bloody Mary mix is by the
pitcher. To make six 6oz servings of Bloody
Mary:
• 1 quart Tomato Juice
• 1 cup Vodka
• 1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
• 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
• ½ teaspoon Tabasco
• Lime Slices
• Ice
• Celery Stalks (optional)
In a pitcher, combine all ingredients except garnishes and
stir well. Serve over ice with lime slices or celery stalks.
The Bloody
Mary is very versatile cocktail recipe. You can have it
during brunch or with dinner while cutting into a juicy filet
mignon. Either way, you will truly enjoy this time-honored
classic. The ever changing recipe will evolve with every different
garnish you add.
